Hometown:  Raised in Columbus Georgia, have lived in Brunswick Georgia for 11 years.

Club/Facility you currently teach at: I teach at nearly all the public facilities in the county including Epworth Park and Mallery Park on St. Simons, and Howard Coffin and North Glynn in Brunswick, along with the Glynn County high school courts and the College of Coastal Georgia courts.

How did you get involved in teaching tennis?  I have always had a huge passion for tennis and when I realized I would not be able to compete much longer I wanted to work towards making a career out of it, and started working towards that at 17, and haven’t looked back.

Best part of your game?  My adaptability in matches to play whatever style is needed to match my opponent’s style of play.

My favorite tennis memory is:  Winning a big national tournament when I was 11 years old or winning my first singles match in college.

My favorite pro player is:  Rafael Nadal, he has been my tennis idol since I was 6 years old.

#1 reason why I enjoy teaching & coaching tennis:  Helping people gain more success in tennis and gain the same love and enjoyment for tennis that I have had throughout my life.

What important tennis message do you want to promote?  Tennis, unlike most sports, is truly a lifelong sport, you can play it at any stage of life and can always have access to it, so it can be a source of enjoyment, competitiveness, and fun for the rest of your life.

What tennis teaching certifications do you hold?  I have been USPTA Professionally certified since 2019.

How many years have you been teaching tennis professionally?  Since I was 18 so close to 6 years now.

What types of lessons/clinics are you currently teaching?  I give private lessons to all skill levels and age groups, I run several tennis academies under my LLC John Powell Tennis Academy, one being a high school age focused group and one being a middle school age focused group. These academies are focused on fostering competitive success to at least be successful school players, but also be successful tournament players and lead into college scholarships with enough work. I eventually want to get more involved in adult clinics in the future as well.
